DemSelf, A Mobile App for Self-administered Touch-Based Cognitive Screening: Participatory Design with Stakeholders

Abstract

'Jan‐Niklas Voigt-Antons'] We conducted five semi-structured expert interviews including a thinkaloud phase to evaluate usability problems. The extent to which the characteristics of the original subtests change by the adaption, as well as the conditions and appropriate context for practical application, were also in question. The participants had expertise in the domain of usability and human-machine interaction and/or in the domain of dementia and neuropsychological assessment.

How they did it

The authors adapted the examiner‑administered Qmci paper test into a touch‑based mobile app (DemSelf) and then performed five semi‑structured expert interviews, including a think‑aloud phase, to uncover usability issues. Participants had expertise in usability, human‑machine interaction, dementia, and neuropsychological assessment. Findings were synthesized to assess how the adaptation altered test characteristics and to determine appropriate usage contexts.

Usability issues were identified in all components of the DemSelf prototype
Inconsistent answer confirmation and inability to correct tapped answers caused frustration and potential bias
Direct adoption of original time limits and simultaneous verbal/textual presentation created problems
Experts preferred the test be administered in a medical office rather than at home

Caveats

✕DemSelf is a different test than Qmci and therefore requires re‑validation
✕Switch from free verbal recall to visual recognition changes test nature and may confound results
✕Reading skill level emerged as a confounding variable
✕Usability problems may disproportionately affect users with vision or motor impairments
