Abstract
This is part of the PLOS Computational Biology Education collection. Emerging fields such as ecoinformatics and computational ecology bear witness to the fact that biology is becoming more quantitative and interdisciplinary. Such research often requires intensive computing, which may be limited by inefficient code that confines the size of a simulation model or restricts the scope of data analysis. It is therefore increasingly necessary for biologists to become versed in efficient programming , as well as in mathematics and statistics . Computer scientists have developed many optimization meth
