Abstract

Leprosy, also known as Hansen’s disease, is a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae. Its most likely route of transmission is the upper respiratory tract, and it has a long incubation period . The disease primarily affects the skin and peripheral nerves, causing sensory loss . If not treated, it can cause progressive and permanent damage to the skin, nerves, limbs or eyes, and may lead to amputations and disabilities.
