Grand challenges in evolutionary and population genetics: the importance of integrating epigenetics, genomics, modeling, and experimentation

Samuel A. Cushman

Abstract

In the sections above I described the challenges and opportunities presented by the intersection of vast genomic and epigenomic datasets, controlled genetic experiments, and simulation modeling. There is a synergistic dependence among these three fields in advancing evolutionary and population genomics. Data alone are not informative. Models alone are not compelling. Experiments alone are not generalizable. It is the intersection among these three different scientific endeavors that provides the best means of addressing the most difficult and important challenges in evolutionary and population
